A Lower Mainland man has been sentenced after spending 241 days in jail following an investigation by the North Vancouver RCMP.
On May 6, 2024, North Vancouver RCMP received a report of a suspicious male at an apartment complex in the 100-block of East 3rd Street in North Vancouver. Officers attended and located several opened and empty Amazon boxes. CCTV footage revealed that a man had entered the lobby and stolen the packages.
A short time later, police received a second call from a complainant reporting that her vehicle had been stolen while parked outside her residence. She also reported that someone had entered her home through an open door and stolen her car keys. CCTV footage from the area confirmed that the same man was responsible for both incidents.
Officers canvassed the area further and obtained additional CCTV footage, which showed the suspect gaining access to a parkade and attempting to enter vehicles by trying the door handles.
Investigators worked with the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), who attended the scene and were able to obtain fingerprints from a vehicle. The prints belonged to a known suspect, Lucas Wear. At the time of the offences, Wear was under court-imposed conditions prohibiting him from entering or handling a motor vehicle without the owner present.
Police concluded their investigation and recommended multiple charges against Wear. An arrest warrant was issued. Unbeknownst to police at the time, Wear was in Alberta and was already in custody there for unrelated offences. Authorities in BC coordinated with Alberta law enforcement to extradite Wear back to BC to face the charges.
On July 10, 2025, Wear was found guilty of:
- Breaking and entering, contrary to Section 348(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Theft of a motor vehicle, contrary to Section 333.1(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada
He received concurrent custodial sentences of two additional days in custody, following 241 days of pre-sentence detention. He was also handed concurrent 24-month probation orders.
"Our investigation shows how important it is for the public to report suspicious activity right away. Working together with forensic teams and across jurisdictions allowed us to bring this case to a successful conclusion. We hope this outcome reinforces community trust and highlights the value of partnership in keeping North Vancouver safe,"
stated Corporal Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer, for the North Vancouver RCMP.
