On September 2, approximately 4,500 students will be returning to school in every community across Oceanside. Many of the students walk, ride or take the bus and Oceanside RCMP want to ensure each student gets to and from school safely.

Motorists are reminded that unless otherwise posted, a 30 kilometre per hour speed limit is in effect in school zones every school day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. School zones are identified by a five-sided fluorescent sign with images of walking students. The minimum fine for speeding in a school zone is $196.00.

Also, as many students are bused to school across the region, drivers are reminded that vehicles from all directions must come to a complete stop when approaching a stationary bus with red lights flashing. The minimum fine for failing to stop for a school bus is $368.00.

During the first few weeks of school, expect to see police and Speed Watch volunteers from Oceanside Community Safety monitoring speeds in school zones.

"As we move from summer into the start of the school year, many drivers may have become accustomed to school not being in session or perhaps forgotten about the many school zones around the community," says Sergeant Shane Worth of the Oceanside RCMP. "Please take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the school zones in your area so we can continue to keep every road user safe."
