A second-degree murder charge has been laid following the deployment of the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) to Port Hardy on October 6, 2024.
Background:
On October 6, 2024, at 4:33 p.m. Port Hardy RCMP received a report of an injured person located on a path near Rupert Street. The person was transported to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. VIIMCU assumed conduct of the investigation.
The deceased was identified as 84-year-old Real Menard of Port Hardy.
Update:
In the morning of March 6, 2026, VIIMCU investigators, with assistance from Prince Rupert RCMP officers, arrested one man in Prince Rupert without incident.
The BC Prosecution Service approved one count of second-degree murder against 54-year-old John Jensen. Mr. Jensen remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
