Fire in forested area behind the Powell River RCMP detachment
On March 4, 2026 at approximately 2:20am, Powell River RCMP officers were working at the detachment and heard a loud boom and felt a rumble throughout the building. Police went outside and observed a large fire in the forested area behind the detachment and immediately called for assistance from Fire and EHS.
Police entered the forest and located two men near the fire, one of which was located inside a tent. The man inside the tent sustained burn injuries and was transported to qathet General Hospital by EHS for treatment. He is expected to recover.
Powell River Fire Rescue was able to control and put out the fire.
It was confirmed that there were no other people on site and no other injuries were reported.
After investigation, it was determined that the fire and explosion were accidental.
Break and Enter at Taws Cycle and Sports
On March 6, 2026 at approximately 5:00 am, Powell River RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter in progress at Taws on Marine Ave. The caller reported that two males wearing masks had taken two bicycles and had left the store.
Police located one of the males close by with one of the stolen bikes. The suspect was arrested for Break and Enter and transported to the detachment. The bike was returned to Taws.
The second suspect was located nearby and was advised he was under arrest. The suspect fled from police on the bicycle.
During the investigation, police were able to identify the second suspect who was subsequently located and arrested for Break and Enter and Obstruction.
Both suspects were released to appear in Court.
The second bicycle is still missing and Powell River RCMP is asking for the public’s help in locating the bike. The bicycle is a dark coloured 2024 Norco Range VLT C2 electric mountain bike.
