On May 6, 2026 at approximately 7:10pm, a Powell River RCMP officer observed dark smoke rising from the Rona lumber building. Police attended and observed a large, rapidly growing fire in the southwest portion of the lumber yard. Powell River Fire Rescue attended and extinguished the fire. The fire caused catastrophic damage to a covered wooden structure and the merchandise inside. Powell River EHS attended and determined that no injuries were sustained in the fire.
Police are reviewing video surveillance from the area and believe that the fire may have started as a result of arson.
The investigation is ongoing.
