With the end of October approaching, Prince George RCMP would like to highlight that the month of October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Why purple?

Since 1987, purple has been known as the colour of domestic violence awareness and the third Thursday in October is known as Purple Thursday.

A Prince George community partner-based working group called The Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) committee, adopted a campaign called ‘Purple Light Nights’ to shine more light on intimate partner violence in our community. The Purple Light Nights campaign originated in Covington, Washington in 2006 to raise awareness around domestic violence.

The idea behind the Purple Light Nights campaign is a call-out to the businesses and residents in Prince George, to display purple lights outside their home or business and send a message that domestic violence has no place in our community.

“On Thursday, October 16, 2025, Prince George RCMP participated in the first ever Purple Light Nights Campaign in the city. The Prince George VAWIR committee worked together to present a proclamation to the city, declaring that annually, between October 16 and 30, the Purple Light Nights Campaign is recognized in the City of Prince George,” says Cst. Jenna Moore, Media Relations Officer with the Prince George RCMP.

This initiative is aimed at increasing awareness among community members about the presence and effects of intimate partner violence, while honouring the victims and survivors, and providing education on prevention and resources available.

For more information about Purple Light Nights, please visit Purple Lights by Prince George VAWIR on Facebook and to learn about the history behind the campaign, please visit www.purplelightnights.org (English only).

We are looking forward to seeing the support of purple lights displayed in October 2026.
