Richmond RCMP reminding the public of the importance of following police direction.
On October 2, 2025, Richmond RCMP officers were responding to a high-risk situation when officers blocked off a roadway with police vehicles. Despite this, individuals continued to drive around the police vehicles, placing themselves and others in potential danger.
In Canada, police have the lawful authority to give directions to ensure public safety. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, individuals must comply with these lawful directions. These directions can include blocking roadways to prevent the public from entering an area that may be unsafe.
“As police officers, part of our job involves responding to high-risk situations where there is potential for serious harm, injury or death. We are continually assessing situations and putting measures in place to minimize the risk to ourselves and the public,” says Corporal Adriana O’Malley, Richmond RCMP Media Relations Officer, “In this case, our officers had blocked the roadway and were in the process of conducting a high-risk arrest when individuals drove into oncoming traffic to get around the police vehicles, placing both themselves and police at risk.”
Richmond RCMP strive to make Richmond the safest community in Canada. This includes increasing awareness and understanding of the role of police in ensuring community safety.
