On January 12, 2026, Richmond RCMP front-line officers received a report from a concerned coworker of a 34-year-old man who had not reported for work, which was out of the ordinary.

Front-line officers learned that this person would typically cycle to work. They initially conducted a missing person’s investigation and worked tirelessly into the night trying to retrace the man’s steps. Unfortunately, the man was found deceased at the 22000-block of Westminster Hwy, which caused road closures while police were on scene investigating.

Richmond RCMP’s General Investigative Services, and RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (ICARS) attended the scene to assist. Richmond RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit (SCU) has since taken conduct of the investigation into the incident and believe the deceased may have been a victim of a hit-and-run involving a vehicle.

Richmond RCMP also note they have now responded to three other serious vehicle collisions involving pedestrians this month alone and remind drivers that they need to be mindful they are sharing roads with pedestrians and cyclists. “Drivers need to slow down and be extra careful during this time of year,” said Corporal Kenneth Lau. “Fog in the mornings, rainy weather and longer nights will affect the driver’s visibility so please give yourself extra time to respond.“

Richmond RCMP also want to remind drivers to remain at the scene in the event they are involved in collisions. Rendering aid and calling 9-1-1 to report the incident can potentially save someone’s life. Alternatively, failing to remain at the scene of an accident that has resulted in injuries is an offence under Section 320.16 of the Criminal Code.

Richmond SCU is seeking witnesses or dash camera footage of the incident. If you were in the area and witnessed anything or if you have any information about this incident, please contact them at 604-204-4600 or email them at RichmondSCU@rcmp-grc.gc.ca, quoting file number 2026-1233.
