Extra patrols are out across the city this summer. Anyone heading to a watch party is asked to plan a safe ride home.

With visitors from around the world arriving this summer for the World Cup, Richmond RCMP wants residents to know that day-to-day service across the city continues exactly as it does the rest of the year – with added patrols already underway.

Vancouver is hosting the games. Richmond RCMP continues regular policing across the City of Richmond and remains the police of jurisdiction at Vancouver International Airport, where more officers will be on duty throughout June and July. Calls for service, neighbourhood patrols, and community programs carry on as usual throughout.

Watch: Richmond RCMP’s summer in the community.

“Richmond is one of the most diverse communities in the country, and our officers reflect that. We’re glad to welcome people from all over the world this summer,” said Corporal Frank Bryson, Media Relations Officer for Richmond RCMP. “We’re just as focused on the residents we serve every day. If you call us this summer, you’ll get the same response you always do.”

With more people out at events and more traffic moving around the city, the detachment is asking drivers to slow down, watch for pedestrians and cyclists, and leave extra time to get where they’re going. Anyone heading out to celebrate is asked to plan a safe ride home in advance and to never drive after drinking or using cannabis.

“Soccer brings out a lot of passion, and that’s part of the fun,” Bryson added. “We just ask everyone to celebrate safely and look out for one another.”

To report something that isn’t an emergency, call the detachment at 604-278-1212. Always call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

The City of Richmond is hosting free watch parties and family events across the city through its Richmond Celebrates Soccer program, running June 12 to July 19. The full schedule of community events is available on the City of Richmond Website and at richmondcelebratessoccer.ca.

Officers will be out in the community all summer. If you see them, say hello.
