Maple Ridge, BC - Ridge Meadows RCMP recently completed a multi-day enforcement blitz aimed at targeting chronic offenders and reducing retail theft in the Maple Ridge downtown core.

Plainclothes and uniformed officers with the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) arrested multiple individuals and recovered thousands of dollars worth of product during the two-day operation.

Further enforcement operations are being planned over the next few weeks as officers crack down on a recent spike in retail theft and shoplifting incidents that have been on the rise.

“In discussions with our business community, and after analyzing our calls for service, we identified a handful of chronic offenders that were brazenly stealing items in large quantity, even returning to the same stores on multiple occasions,” says Ridge Meadows RCMP Specialized Response Team Sergeant Joe Whalley.

The type of items stolen ranged anywhere from food products to household goods to consumer appliances and electronics. The total dollar value ranged from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars worth of stolen product destined for illegal re-sale or in the hands of other criminals.

Officers arrested seven persons for various offences, including theft, failing to comply with probation, and failing to comply with a release order.

Multiple individuals arrested had conditions not to attend certain retail outlet stores for which they were breaching. This included one individual who had been convicted for theft eleven days earlier in another jurisdiction only to re-attend the same retail chain in Maple Ridge and be arrested again.

“These types of thefts are not without consequence,” says Sgt. Whalley. “Retail theft not only affects the local economy, but it contributes to further social disorder and threatens safety and security in our community. It is also associated with other elements of criminality that take up time and extra policing resources further down the road.”

Our CRU officers take a multi-prong approach to address the unique challenges of policing in the downtown core (see video). This includes working with businesses, bylaws, health and social service agencies, and other partners to manage the complex needs of those living in our community while balancing public safety.

“Many in the community face challenges,” says Sgt. Whalley. “We are committed to taking a compassionate approach to those in difficult situations and living with mental health issues. As a result, our approach involves specifically targeting those repeat offenders who are contributing to a large percentage of these crimes and doing so either for profit or other unlawful reasons.”

This type of enforcement will go a long way to help deter this type of criminality and hopefully provide some reassurance to the business community that this kind of activity will not be tolerated.

Ridge Meadows RCMP believes in intelligence led policing and providing a responsive and proactive approach to public safety, in partnership with our community, business, and municipal partners.
