A suspect has been arrested and charged as a result of an investigation into a sexual assault on an elderly woman in Cobble Hill, BC in July 2024.

Background

On July 23, 2024, just after 9:00 p.m., Shawnigan Lake RCMP responded to the area of Carlton Dr after receiving a report that an elderly woman had been sexually assaulted after an unknown man entered her home.

The RCMP Police Dog Service initially attended the area alongside frontline officers but could not track the suspect. The Island District General Investigation Section, assisted by the Island District RCMP Forensic Identification Section and Shawnigan Lake RCMP were involved in the investigation.

“The investigation reached a culmination point as a suspect was eventually identified through forensic evidence analysis”, said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP.

Update

On June 1, 2026, the BC Prosecution Service approved charges against a 17-year-old suspect for break and enter and commit an indictable offence, a sexual assault, and disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence. The suspect’s whereabouts was unknown and therefore a warrant for his arrest was issued. The suspect was eventually arrested on June 3, 2026, and remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

“The Youth Criminal Justice Act prohibits us from naming the suspect. Given the matter is now before the court, we will not be providing further details about this investigation”, Corporal Alex Bérubé adds.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
