On July 19, 2025, at approximately 3:50 a.m., Smithers RCMP received a request from Smithers Fire Rescue to assist with a large fire at the Temporary Overnight Sheltering Area (TOSA), also known as the tent encampment.
One individual was transported to hospital and treated for their injuries.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, one individual has been arrested for arson. The investigation remains active, and no further details will be released at this time.
“Arson is a serious criminal offence, and it is alleged to have occurred in the context of a TOSA, where individuals face overlapping barriers stemming from gaps in housing and health services,” said Constable Jocelyn Foidart of the Smithers RCMP.
Smithers RCMP would like to thank the community members who quickly reported the fire, as well as Smithers Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services for their swift response.
Coordinated response follows fire amid complex public safety needs
We also extend our appreciation to the Indigenous organizations, community partners and Town of Smithers who were on site today providing support to affected residents.
“This incident reinforces the importance of a coordinated response to public safety, while also highlighting the need to address the ongoing challenges related to homelessness and health in our community, where gaps in services continue to exist,” added Cst. Foidart, who also co-chairs the Smithers Situation Table.
Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to contact the Smithers RCMP at 250-847-3233.
