Charge laid in relation to arson in Smithers

The Smithers RCMP is providing an update regarding the fire that occurred at the Temporary Overnight Sheltering Area (TOSA), also known as the tent encampment.
Robert Nicholas, 45 years old, has been charged with arson causing bodily harm following approval from the BC Prosecution Service. This matter is scheduled for court on August 5, 2025.
"This investigation involved a coordinated effort between our police officers, fire officials, and Crown counsel,"
said Sergeant Ryan Law, Acting Detachment Commander of the Smithers RCMP.
"This incident had significant impacts on an already vulnerable population. We recognize the serious nature of this offence and thank our partners and community members who assisted in the investigation,"
added Sgt. Law.
As the matter is now before the courts, no further details will be released at this time.
