On August 2, 2025 Smithers RCMP received a report of suspicious activity in the alley behind the Royal Bank during daylight hours. Officers attended and located several items of drug paraphernalia in the area.
Later that evening, police conducted proactive foot patrols in the downtown core, focusing on local businesses and alleys. During these patrols, officers found a man in the alley actively overdosing and unresponsive. Officers administered Naloxone and successfully revived the individual, who was then transferred to the care of BC Emergency Health Services.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the serious health issues impacting our community” said Constable Jocelyn Foidart, Media Relations Officer, Smithers RCMP. In the absence of those supports, police are often the ones responding to what is, at its core, a health crisis," said Cst. Foidart.
We thank the community for reporting concerns. Your calls help us respond to those in crisis.
