Smithers RCMP has successfully secured funding from the provincial government through the Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program (C-STEP). The funding will provide additional overtime shifts focused on proactive patrols in Smithers. Along with crime suppression and prevention, these patrols recognize that many calls for service involve health-related emergencies. The initiative reflects the reality that preventing crime often begins with ensuring people can access the health and social supports they need.

Building on success

In 2024, Smithers RCMP participated in the Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) program, which supported extra patrols in the downtown core. The increased police presence received positive feedback from community members. Building on the success of SITE, Smithers RCMP applied for and obtained C-STEP funding for 2025.

What it means for the community

This year’s C-STEP funding will support patrols in the downtown core and surrounding areas. Smithers RCMP already works closely with partner agencies, and the funding will strengthen this approach by supporting additional referrals with the goal of earlier connections to care. By combining proactive patrols with timely referrals to health supports, the initiative aims to ensure people coming into contact with police are better supported in accessing the right services, while also reducing opportunities for violence and property crime.

"We are grateful to the provincial government for providing this funding through C-STEP," said Acting Staff Sergeant Ryan Law, Smithers RCMP Detachment Commander. "This funding ensures that additional patrols and referrals for vulnerable individuals are delivered at no cost to the municipality," added Sgt. Law.

C-STEP is part of a province wide initiative to enhance public safety by funding overtime patrols in communities across British Columbia.
