Smithers File 2025-4590

Smithers RCMP are investigating an impaired driving collision.

Days after officers joined other detachments across British Columbia in a province-wide enforcement effort targeting impaired drivers, Smithers RCMP members continue to respond to impaired drivers.

On December 6, RCMP across Northern British Columbia conducted impaired driving enforcement as part of the annual Light Up the Province campaign, checking approximately 400 vehicles during coordinated check stops throughout the region. The campaign forms part of a province-wide holiday road safety initiative aimed at reducing impaired driving and preventing serious injuries and fatalities.

Despite the recent enforcement efforts, on December 11th at approximately 1:00 a.m., Smithers RCMP responded to a collision between a vehicle and a semi-truck on Highway 16. The occupants of the vehicle were transported to Bulkley Valley District Hospital, where a passenger was treated for injuries.

The driver of the vehicle is currently under investigation for impaired driving causing bodily harm. The investigation remains ongoing.

“We continue to see impaired drivers on our roads despite repeated enforcement and public messaging,” said Staff Sergeant Ryan Law, Detachment Commander, Smithers RCMP. “These are preventable situations, and the consequences can be life-altering for everyone involved,” added S/Sgt. Law.

Last weekend, RCMP members issued two additional 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPs) for impaired driving, as holiday parties continue across the community.

Police remind motorists that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal collisions in British Columbia. Enforcement will continue throughout the holiday season, and drivers are urged to plan ahead and arrange safe transportation before getting behind the wheel.
