Smithers RCMP have received an increase in reports of theft-related crimes in recent weeks. We are thankful to community members and businesses who continue to report incidents, as this information plays an important role in supporting public safety.
We sometimes hear from community members that theft-related incidents are not reported because it feels like nothing happens afterward. While we understand that frustration, not every reported incident results in immediate visible outcomes to the public.
Police statistics and planning are based on reported incidents. When incidents go unreported, the information police rely on may not fully reflect what is happening in the community. This can affect how trends appear and how resources and prevention efforts are planned.
We use a range of investigative tools when responding to reported incidents. In some cases, this can include seeking public assistance to help identify individuals when other investigative steps have not been successful.
Each reported incident helps police build a clearer picture over time, assess situations individually, and work with businesses and community partners on appropriate responses and prevention strategies.
Smithers RCMP also recognize that theft-related incidents can be connected to a range of underlying challenges. Support services are available locally for individuals and families who may be struggling to meet basic needs, including organizations such as the Salvation Army and other community supports that help with food, clothing, and essential items.
While support services are available, theft remains a criminal offence, and reported incidents are investigated based on the circumstances of each case.
January is Crime Stoppers Awareness Month. In addition to reporting directly to police, community members can also provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Anonymous tips can help police identify trends, support investigations, and contribute to community safety.
