Individual arrested and charged with violent offences

On February 21, 2026, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Smithers RCMP received a report of a break and enter in progress at a residence in Smithers.
Frontline officers responded and located a suspect, later identified as Kyle Hanes, seated in a vehicle outside the residence.
As officers exited their police vehicles to engage with the accused, Kyle Hanes accelerated and swerved the vehicle towards our officers, striking one of them and causing injury. During the interaction, the officer’s hand broke the rear window of the accused's vehicle.
Kyle Hanes fled the scene but was was later located by responding officers. Despite being injured, the officer continued assisting in the search and the subsequent arrest of the accused.
Charges were approved in this matter and Kyle Hanes has been charged with the following offences:
- Break and Enter with Intent: Section 348(1), Criminal Code
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle: Section 320.13(1), Criminal Code
- Flight from Police: Section 320.17, Criminal Code
- Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer: Section 270(1), Criminal Code
- Assaulting a Peace Officer: Section 270(1), Criminal Code
Kyle Hanes was remanded into custody and his next court appearance is on February 24, 2026.
“This incident highlights the risks officers face while protecting the community,” said Staff Sergeant Ryan Law. “Despite being injured, our officer continued assisting in the search and arrest of this individual. That level of commitment is what our team brings to this community every day,” added S/Sgt. Law.
The investigation is ongoing.
