Smithers RCMP File 2026-574
A man has been remanded into custody after a firearm was located during a police response on VanGaalen Road.
On February 20, 2026, Smithers RCMP were called to check on a vehicle reported to be idling on VanGaalen Road. When officers conducted a traffic stop, the passenger exited the vehicle and fled into a nearby wooded area.
Police contained the area and the individual who fled was identified as Kenneth Thomas. A knife was also located at the scene and Mr. Thomas is currently bound by a release order prohibiting him from possessing weapons.
Officers searched the area where he had initially fled and located a pistol and the serial number was found to be defaced.
Kenneth Thomas was arrested and held in custody. The following charges were approved in this matter:
- Possession of a firearm without licence and registration – Section 91(1)
- Possession of a firearm knowing it was not licensed or registered – Section 92(1)
- Possession of a firearm with altered serial number – Section 108(1)(b)
- Possession of a firearm contrary to court order – Section 117.01(1)
- Careless storage/handling of a firearm – Section 86(2)
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose – Section 88(1) (two counts)
- Breach of release order – Section 145(5)(a)
Mr. Thomas has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court on February 24, 2026.
"Community vigilance played an important role in this matter; police were able to respond quickly because a concerned member of the public reported suspicious activity," said Staff Sergeant Ryan Law. "When residents trust their instincts and reach out, it allows officers to intervene early and, in some cases, prevent more serious incidents from occurring," added S/Sgt. Law, Smithers RCMP Detachment Commander.
The investigation remains ongoing.
