Smithers RCMP are raising awareness about violence and exploitation of women in our community during Prevention of Violence Against Women Week and Sexual Assault Awareness month.
Between January 1 and April 20, 2026, Smithers RCMP responded to 33 reported cases of intimate partner violence. This number reflects only what is reported and does not capture the full scope of what is happening in the community.
Smithers RCMP recently completed training on how to detect and intervene in human trafficking and are using this knowledge to better understand how people can be targeted and exploited.
“We are actively investigating incidents involving the violence and exploitation of vulnerable people” said Staff Sergeant Ryan Law, Smithers RCMP Detachment Commander. “The majority of cases involve women, but in some cases, youth and others experiencing vulnerability are also being exploited,” added S/Sgt. Law, Smithers RCMP.
“Outdoor and unstable living environments are associated with increased risk, especially for women,” added Cst. Jocelyn Foidart, Media Relations Officer, Smithers RCMP.
Police continue to work closely with community partners to support individuals and families in a safe way, recognizing that not everyone feels safe coming forward to police.
So far this year, Smithers RCMP have also supported a number of sexual assault investigations. These include incidents reported directly to our detachment, as well as files where we are assisting other detachments when survivors relocate to Smithers for a fresh start.
If you or someone you know is experiencing violence or exploitation, you are not alone. You can contact Smithers RCMP or reach out to local supports, including the Northern Society for Domestic Peace, which offers free and confidential services.
