Smithers RCMP release video in ongoing vandalism investigation

Smithers RCMP continues to investigate the vandalism of the Pride crosswalk that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 18, 2026.
Since the incident was reported, investigators have canvassed the downtown core, obtained closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, reviewed video evidence, and spoken with potential witnesses.
Police are now releasing CCTV footage that shows a group of individuals who were in the downtown area at approximately 1:15 a.m. on July 18th. Investigators are looking to identify these individuals and speak with them as part of the ongoing investigation.

Video description:
Closed-Circuit video taken from a nearby business that shows a group of people standing together talking in the alley across from the Bugwood Bean coffee shop on 2nd avenue. A few moments later two additional people walk over to the group.
The group continues to talk. One individual is wearing a shirt with a white logo on the back. Another individual is wearing a white hoodie with a logo on the back. Both logos are blurry on the video so they can’t be described in detail. After a few minutes the group leaves the alley way and walks across the street to 2nd avenue. The video ends.
The timestamp displayed on the video is one hour behind the actual time. Investigators confirmed the correct time by comparing the footage with additional video obtained from the area.
Smithers RCMP would like the public to take a close look at the video, including distinctive clothing worn by two of the individuals that may help members of the public identify them.
“Our investigators have completed extensive follow-up since this incident was reported, and we appreciate the assistance already received from the community,” said Corporal Lewis Stryde, Acting Detachment Commander of the Smithers RCMP. “As our investigation progresses, we also want to encourage those involved to come forward and speak with police.”
