Sooke RCMP had a busy year catching impaired drivers

The Sooke RCMP had a busy 2024 catching 142 impaired drivers and taking them off the streets. This is an increase of 22% from last year where 116 impaired drivers were taken off of Sooke streets in 2023.

While the number has increased, Sooke RCMP detachment commander S/Sgt. Greg Willcocks says this is a result of more police resources being on the road.

With the change to 24 hour policing we have more officers on the road and we are focusing our efforts on catching people who are impaired by alcohol and drugs. If you are planning on driving impaired in Sooke know that you will get caught. Please plan for a sober ride home,  S/Sgt. Greg Willcocks adds.

Impaired driving continues to be on the rise with the Sooke RCMP as the detachment has already caught 41 impaired drivers in the first quarter of 2025 which is 24% higher then the first quarter of 2024.

These numbers are increasing but it is largely because Sooke is one of the fastest growing communities in the province and we are growing substantially every year. With more and more people moving to Sooke we are going to come across more people who are impaired because our population is larger, says S/Sgt. Greg Willcocks.

As part of the detachment’s annual performance plan the Sooke RCMP is focusing on preventing and catching impaired drivers in the community.

If anyone sees a suspected impaired driver, they are asked to safely call police to report it.
