Sea to Sky RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) in Squamish is investigating an incident that occurred at a local encampment early Tuesday morning and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
At approximately 4:40 a.m. on May 19, 2026, Squamish RCMP responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a possible shooting at an encampment in the 37000-block of Third Avenue in downtown Squamish. Frontline officers attended and found several individuals affected by bear spray. BC Emergency Health Services provided treatment at the scene, and no serious injuries were reported.
The investigation has determined that bear spray was deployed into a tent occupied by three individuals, and a shotgun was discharged during the incident. The area has been secured while officers process the scene.
Sea to Sky RCMP GIS has assumed conduct of the investigation. Police will be examining the scene throughout the morning and into the afternoon and are requesting the public to avoid the area.
Investigators are working to identify a group of individuals believed to be involved who fled the area. While this investigation is in its early stages, police believe that it was a targeted incident.
“We understand incidents like this can be concerning, particularly when they occur in locations that have seen previous police activity,” said Staff Sergeant Sasha Banks, Operations Commander of the Squamish RCMP. “Our officers are actively investigating this matter and continue to conduct proactive patrols in the area. We are working closely with our community partners to address safety concerns and ensure support is available to those affected.”
Squamish RCMP are asking any witnesses, anyone who may have dashcam footage or video footage from their vehicle to contact the detachment at 604-892-6100.
