As the Holiday Season ramps up, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is encouraging everyone to keep cyber-safety top of mind while checking off their gift lists.

“Shopping online is quick and convenient, but it’s important to stay alert and safeguard your personal and financial details,” states Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “Fraudsters look for opportunities during this busy season so keep your guard up and don’t give them one. Here are some key tips to help you shop with more confidence and peace of mind.”

Shop smart and stay secure

  • Stick to legitimate retailers: buy only from trusted, well-known sellers
  • Check for security: look for “https” and the padlock symbol in your browser
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi: unsecured networks make it easier for hackers
  • Too good to be true? It likely is.  Be cautious of unrealistically low prices
  • Do your homework: research sellers and read customer reviews
  • Pay safely: use credit cards or reputable, secure payment platforms

Keep a close eye on your accounts. Review your bank and credit card statements regularly. If you spot suspicious or unauthorized activity, contact your financial institution right away and secure your accounts. You can also place alerts on your credit file through Equifax or TransUnion.

If you’ve lost money or had your personal information compromised, make a police report. If not, but you suspect a scam attempt, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
