The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is investigating a fire at an apartment complex that claimed the life of one person last week.
On Wednesday, March 25th, 2026, around 6:15 a.m., police were called to assist Vernon Fire Rescue Services who had responded to structure fire at a residential building in the 2300-block of 36th St in Vernon.
The structure sustained significant damage and during firefighting activities, what are believed to be human remains were found inside a unit in the building. Once occupant was home at the time of the fire and sadly, was unable to escape. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and based on the findings of the investigation; criminality is not suspected "We want to extend our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased," states Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. The BC Coroners Service was notified and is conducting their own concurrent fact finding investigation.
