Lock out auto crime

April as Auto Crime Prevention Month and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is encouraging residents to take an active role in protecting their vehicles. By staying alert and making smart choices, community members can help reduce vehicle thefts and break-ins.

Auto crime continues to impact the communities in the North Okanagan. In 2025, police received more than 550 reports of property being stolen from vehicles, along with over 250 reports of vehicles themselves being stolen. While RCMP initiatives such as the Bait Car program, #9PMRoutine, and Lock-Out Auto Crime are ongoing, police say these efforts are most effective when paired with public awareness and prevention.

“Many auto crimes happen simply because an opportunity presents itself,” says Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “When a vehicle is left unlocked or valuables are visible inside, it increases the likelihood it will be targeted. Taking a few seconds to secure your vehicle can make a significant difference.”

Residents are reminded to be “Car Smart” and consider the following prevention tips:

  • Ensure your vehicle is locked whenever it is parked or left unattended;
  • Choose parking locations that are well lit and easy to see;
  • Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle, including personal items or garage door openers;
  • Equip your vehicle with an immobilizer or other theft-prevention device;
  • Keep your keys with you at all times;
  • Avoid leaving spare keys inside the vehicle.

“Auto crime affects more than just the individual victim,” Terleski adds. “When residents take steps to protect their vehicles, it helps improve safety and security throughout the entire community.”

More information on vehicle crime prevention and safety tips can be found on the ICBC website or through IMPACT.
