Halloween is a time for fun, costumes, and community spirit, but it’s also a busy evening on local streets. Officers will be increasing patrols throughout neighbourhoods to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and enjoyable night.
“Visibility and awareness are key,” says S/Sgt. Brendan Dolan, Detachment Commander of the West Kelowna RCMP. “We encourage parents to make sure their children are easily seen in the dark and to remind them to stay on sidewalks and cross streets safely.”
The RCMP are offering the following Halloween safety tips:
For trick-or-treaters:
- Wear bright or reflective costumes and carry a flashlight or glow stick;
- Always travel in groups and stay in well lit areas;
-
Never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle;
For motorists:
- Slow down and be prepared for sudden stops;
- Watch for children crossing streets mid block or between parked cars;
- Avoid distractions while driving and never drive impaired;
For homeowners:
- Keep pathways well lit and free of tripping hazards;
- Secure pets indoors to prevent unexpected scares;
- Report any suspicious or dangerous activity to police immediately.
The West Kelowna RCMP also remind residents that fireworks are regulated within the City of West Kelowna, and unauthorized use may result in fines or seizure.
“Let’s make this Halloween a safe and memorable one for our community,” adds S/Sgt. Dolan. “We’ll be out in neighbourhoods, engaging with residents and helping ensure everyone can enjoy the night responsibly.”
Anyone who observes suspicious activity or unsafe behavior is encouraged to contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880, or in an emergency, call 911.
