Content

The West Kelowna RCMP is advising the public of an ongoing scam after receiving multiple reports from residents over the last month who have been contacted by individuals falsely claiming to be police officers from the West Kelowna RCMP.

Police have received reports that callers are telling residents they owe money related to a traffic offence and are demanding immediate payment. In these calls, the suspects are impersonating West Kelowna RCMP officers and have used the names Constable Miller and Constable McLeod.

The callers may attempt to create a sense of urgency or fear, pressuring individuals to act quickly by making payments through various methods. These calls are fraudulent.

The West Kelowna RCMP wants to remind the public that police officers do not demand payment over the phone for traffic violations or fines, nor do they request payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or electronic transfers.

Residents who receive a call of this nature are advised to:

  1. Hang up immediately;
  2. Do not provide any personal or financial information;
  3. Do not send money or take any action requested by the caller.

If you believe you have been contacted by this scam or may have already provided information, you are encouraged to report the incident to the West Kelowna RCMP and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

The West Kelowna RCMP continues to monitor the situation and reminds the public to remain vigilant, especially when receiving unsolicited calls claiming to be from police or other authorities.

For more information on common scams and how to protect yourself, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
