Every October 1st, motorists must keep in mind winter driving requirements on certain provincial highways and municipal roads. Be on the lookout for the signs displayed as they indicate an area where winter tires and/or chains are required. For the West Shore, the Malahat (part of Highway 1) is the only provincial highway with this requirement. There are other local areas such as Bear Mountain in Langford where this also applies.
Failing to comply with these requirements is an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act. Officers can issue violation tickets up to $121 for passenger vehicles, or up to $598 for commercial vehicles. Vehicles can also be turned around or towed at owners’ expense when appropriate.

Having the right tires and/or chains is one thing, but motorists also need to make sure their tires are in good conditions and have sufficient thread dept, with a minimum of 3.5mm each. The age of the tires also makes a difference on how well it will perform, with older tires deteriorating over time. Finally, make sure they are properly inflated to vehicles and manufacturers specifications.
