On June 28, 2026, at approximately 12:49 p.m., West Shore RCMP was notified by William Head Institution in Metchosin that one inmate was unaccounted for during the facility’s midday count. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued for 69-year-old Ernest Jensen, who was wanted for being unlawfully at large.
On the afternoon of June 29, 2026, the body of Ernest Jensen was recovered near the shoreline along William Head Institution by the RCMP West Coast Marine Services alongside Metchosin Fire Department.
West Shore RCMP Serious Crimes Unit continues to liaise with Correctional Services Canada (CSC), and the B.C Coroners Office, as the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Ernest Jensen is now underway.
We would like to thank the public and the media for their patience as officers and CSC staff worked diligently through the search for Mr. Jensen.
We recognize that incidents like this are concerning, particularly for those who live in the surrounding area. We want to reassure the public that officers mobilized quickly, deploying significant resources immediately after the report from William Head Institution was received. Our priority has been and remains the safety of the public.
We appreciate the community’s understanding and cooperation while this investigation is ongoing. No further details will be released at this time.
