Our 6-month training program welcomes successful applicants to the RCMP Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. Training is delivered onsite, year-round in both official languages. Expect long, full days with limited free time.

As a cadet, you will take part in an immersive program as part of a diverse 32-member troop. You will learn the realities of community policing through scenarios, real teamwork, classroom work and more.

Operational framework

The CAPRA Model is an operational application of the RCMP's vision and mission. It combines the RCMP's commitment to communities and clients, problem solving in partnership and continuous learning.

The acronym CAPRA stands for:

  • C = Clients
  • A = Acquiring and analysing information
  • P = Partnership
  • R = Response
  • A = Assessment for continuous improvement

Design and delivery

CTP curriculum is designed to prepare you for the realities of modern, community-based policing. Training is:

  • available in both official languages
  • focused on problem-solving
  • continuously updated to reflect the evolving landscape of frontline policing

The training model is designed around you, as an active learner. As a cadet, you are expected to take an active role in your own development. You will build the judgement, confidence and adaptability skills required for real-world policing.

How you will learn

Training is hands-on, interactive and varied. Your days start early and are structured with limited free time. Strong time management is essential to keep up with coursework and training demands.

You will learn through:

  • classroom instruction
  • simulations and scenario-based exercises
  • presentations and case studies based on actual policing situations
  • group work and collaborative problem-solving
  • community-based interactions that build trust and strengthen relationships
  • practical skill and technique development
  • physical training

You will gain the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to serve effectively and respond to the complexities of real communities from day one.

Assessment

Evaluations are ongoing throughout the CTP to measure readiness for operational duties. They measure the full range of competencies required for operational readiness, including conduct, knowledge and performance.

You will be tested using a range of methods, including:

  • written exams
  • oral evaluations
  • practical skill demonstrations
  • scenario-based role plays
  • Police Fitness Assessment

How do you pass the CTP?

You must meet a professional level of performance in all competencies to graduate. These standards will be provided to you as a cadet at the start of the CTP. They form the basis for self, peer and facilitator evaluations.

Continuous evaluation ensures that when competencies are not yet met, there is opportunity for a cadet to be reassigned to an earlier stage of training with a different troop. This helps strengthen key skills and supports successful progression. It means training may be longer than the original 26 weeks.
