Training Tuesdays: Well-being supports

First posted on December 10, 2024
In this edition of Training Tuesdays, we are focusing on supports that help many cadets adjust to Depot life. Training at the RCMP Academy can be a daunting but exciting experience. Cadets arrive at a new place with new people, new challenges, a busy schedule and high expectations. Here there are wellness supports, inclusive spaces, and meal accommodations available to all cadets during their time at the RCMP Academy.
A well-being team is available to all cadets for guidance and a listening ear, especially in times of personal difficulty. The Cadet Resource Liaison helps with issues and concerns related directly to the Cadet Training Program. The social worker supports the emotional and personal needs (including family, etc.) of the cadets. The chaplain is here to support emotional and spiritual needs and connect cadets with local faith communities here in Regina. Other supports include an Indigenous advisor and a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) advisor. These advisors provide guidance relating to Indigenous and DEI initiatives and provide community and cultural connection.
Spaces include the RCMP Chapel, the Indigenous Spirit Room and the Quiet Room. The Chapel provides a quiet place for reflection, meditation and prayer for anyone of any faith or background. The Indigenous Spirit Room is a peaceful space for smudging, reflection, meditation and prayer. The Quiet room is a multi-faith space, that has a foot-washing station for pre-prayer ablutions.
Additionally, the Division Mess makes foods to accommodate dietary requirements including religious, cultural, and ethical needs. These include halal, vegetarian and vegan options.
Culture, religion and spirituality are important elements for many cadets. Having a well-rounded support system helps address stressors of training, contribute to overall wellness, and foster community.
