What is the Hate Crimes Task Force?
The Hate Crimes Task Force was launched in spring 2022 under the Chiefs of Police National Roundtable, a forum established by the RCMP to bring together senior police leaders to discuss policing and public safety issues of importance to Canadians and the policing community.
Co-chaired by the RCMP and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, the Task Force was created in recognition of the prevalence of hate crimes and incidents in Canada and that more could be done within the policing and prosecution realm to respond. Its mandate is to increase awareness of the scope, nature and impact of hate crimes and incidents among police and the Canadian public.
Its objective is to better understand the systemic gaps and challenges in the current police response and to make meaningful contributions, through the development of practical tools and solutions for Canadian police—from a prevention, investigation, victims' support and prosecution standpoint. This is while recognizing that addressing hate crimes and incidents in Canada requires more than just police, but the action and input from a variety of stakeholders and institutions.
The Task Force is made up of representatives from small, medium, large and Indigenous police services from across the country, as well as provincial Ministries of the Attorney General. It has a diverse membership with a range of expertise and knowledge—frontline policing, outreach and engagement, dedicated hate crimes investigators, victims' services, legal services and training.
Through the Task Force, a solid and growing network has been created. This network shares information and works together to drive forward the police response to hate crimes and incidents in Canada.
Hate-motivated crimes and incidents are investigated by the local police of jurisdiction where the criminal activity takes place.
