On Jan. 13, at 6:15 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to an incident that ended in two arrests and three vehicles being damaged, including an unmarked police cruiser.
The incident began on Crescent Road in Portage la Prairie, when an officer attempted to pull over a Chevrolet Equinox for a traffic violation. The suspect vehicle did not stop.
Not long after, a second RCMP officer travelling in an unmarked police cruiser on 3rd Street NE saw the suspect vehicle pass him and lose control, hitting the curb and almost driving onto the sidewalk before continuing down the street. The officer followed the suspect vehicle from a distance to the former Manitoba Developmental Centre compound and attempted to pull it over in a roundabout.
The suspect vehicle struck the unmarked police cruiser while travelling the wrong way in the roundabout, causing some damage, and then pulled away. The officer inside the vehicle was not seriously hurt and the cruiser, while damaged, remained driveable.
A short time later, the suspect vehicle was observed driving on 3rd Street SE, crossing Saskatchewan Avenue on a red light before colliding with a parked truck. No one was inside the truck at the time of the collision. Both vehicles incurred significant damage.
RCMP removed two suspects from the vehicle, arrested them, then transported them both to Portage General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
