On March 1, 2026, at 4:50 p.m., Headingley RCMP responded to a report of shots fired on Road 56 North, at the intersection of Highway 248 in the RM of Cartier.

A vehicle travelling south on Highway 248 observed another vehicle parked near the intersection with a barrel protruding from the driver-side window. As his vehicle got closer to the parked vehicle, the driver heard a bang and believed his vehicle had been struck.

Officers responded immediately and determined that the suspect was shooting at the stop sign and not the vehicle. His truck was not damaged and the driver, a 41-year-old male from Swan Lake First Nation, was not injured.

The suspect, a 47-year-old male, from the RM of Cartier, was subsequently arrested for firearms related offences. He was released on conditions, with a court appearance scheduled for May 12, 2026, in Winnipeg.

The RCMP takes these complaints seriously and they are investigated thoroughly. People are encouraged to obtain their Possession and Acquisition licences if they are handling firearms. As a reminder, the four fundamental rules of firearms safety are:

  1. Treat every firearm as if it was loaded
  2. Never point at anything you are not willing to destroy
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire
  4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

Additional information about licences and firearms can be found through the Canadian Firearms Program at this website https://rcmp.ca/en/firearms or by calling 1-800-731-4000

Headingley RCMP continue to investigate.
