On April 12, shortly after 2:40 a.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP initiated a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway after an officer noticed a truck driving well below the speed limit.
The stop occurred just south of Portage la Prairie, near Henderson Drive. The driver was found to be impaired and received an immediate roadside prohibition. A subsequent search of the suspect uncovered a small bag containing cocaine, bear spray and various drug paraphernalia – including packaging, a scale and some cash.
The bag and its contents were seized and the truck impounded.
A 20-year-old male, from the Dakota Tipi First Nation, was arrested without incident. He faces charges of:
- Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking;
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
The suspect was released on an appearance notice.
