After an appeal for public assistance, the operators of two all-terrain vehicles seen traveling in a mandatory evacuation zone have been identified by RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador. One of the operators came forward and identified themself to police, and the other was identified with the help of the public. An investigation is ongoing, and will determine if charges under the Emergency Services Act are appropriate.

Patrols of the evacuated zones by RCMP officers on ATVs continue, with support from Conservation Officers from Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture Enforcement NL. Over 200 properties in the evacuation area were checked by police and partners on Wednesday, and no unauthorized personnel were observed breaching the mandatory evacuation order.

RCMP NL reminds residents that failure to comply with an evacuation order — including unauthorized access of a mandatory evacuation area — is an offence under the Emergency Services Act. Officers are issuing summary offence tickets to those who enter an evacuation zone without prior authorization from the Provincial Emergency Operation Centre.

Evacuation orders remain in place in Western Bay, Ochre Pit Cove and a portion of Northern Bay. For the most up to date information, please visit gov.nl.ca/alerts.

To report suspicious or criminal activity, or unauthorized access of an evacuation zone, please contact Harbour Grace RCMP at 709-596-5014.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador continues to thank our communities for their support, patience, and cooperation during these relief efforts.
