Bay St. George RCMP investigating fires on the west coast

Bay St. George RCMP officers are seeking the public’s assistance as they investigate recent fires in the region. Police are planning to increase patrols in the area and urge witnesses to come forward.
Just before 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday August 6, officers attended location in the area of Minnesota Drive and Carolina Avenue in Stephenville to investigate a report of a few small brush fire that had already been extinguished by staff from a local business. The cause of the fires is still under investigation.
Later that same evening, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Bay St. George RCMP was advised that firefighters from the St. George’s Fire Department had responded to and extinguished a blaze discovered in the area of Farm Road. This fire was initially reported to and investigated by the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture. The RCMP is also now investigating the circumstances surrounding this fire.
The investigation into each of these fires is ongoing. Anyone with information about the cause of any of these fires is asked to contact Bay St. George RCMP at 709-643-2118.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador thanks to the civilians who worked quickly to douse the flames of the fires in Stephenville before they could spread into the tinder dry woods. RCMP also extends its gratitude to the St. George’s Fire Department for its response.
A province-wide fire ban is currently in effect. Anyone who sees an active fire is asked to report it immediately to their local fire department. If you would like to report suspicious activity, please contact your local police as soon as possible to make a report.
