Break and enter suspects in Deer Lake apprehended by RCMP Police Service Dog Thor

Following a report of a break and enter at a residence in Deer Lake on Sunday, two suspects were apprehended by RCMP Police Service Dog (PSD) Thor and his handler.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. on August 10, 2025. Deer Lake RCMP received a report of a residential break and enter at an apartment in Deer Lake. Two masked individuals armed with knives forced their way into an apartment in Deer Lake and attempted to steal from the occupant, who was home at the time. One of the assailants sustained serious injuries and both subjects fled the residence on foot.

Deer Lake RCMP responded within minutes and engaged Police Dog Services. PSD Thor followed a trail from outside the residence to another local residence where the injured male was arrested without incident. The second male attempted to flee but was also arrested.

RCMP West District General Investigation Section (GIS) was engaged and executed a search warrant at the second residence as part of the investigation on August 10.

Both men appeared in court on Monday, August 11, 2025 and remain in custody. Daren Burden is set to appear in court again this afternoon. Kyler Vokey will appear in court on August 19, 2025.

28-year-old Kyler Wayne Vokey has been charged:

  • Breaking and Entering committing an indictable offence
  • Disguised with intent
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Robbery with an offensive weapon
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Mischief
  • Breach of Probation
  • Breach of Release Order

37-year-old Daren Gerry Burden has been charged with:

  • Breaking and Entering committing an indictable offence
  • Disguised with intent
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Robbery with an offensive weapon
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Mischief

The investigation is continuing.
