Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating after a motor vehicle collision early Sunday evening resulted in the death of a man on the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH).
Shortly before 5:00 p.m. on August 17, 2025, RCMP officers responded to a report of a single vehicle crash on the TCH near Cape Ray. Members of the Channel-Port aux Basques Fire Department and emergency medical services personnel also responded to the scene.
The passenger of the vehicle, a 44-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle. Despite the live saving efforts by passersby, including an off-duty fire fighter, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, a 37-year-old woman, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by emergency paramedics with NL Health Services.
A Collision Reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services attended the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has also been engaged.
At the hospital, as part of the ongoing investigation, the woman was arrested and provided a demand for blood samples. She refused to comply and now faces a charge of refusing to comply with a blood demand. The woman is set to appear in court on December 3, 2025.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador offers its condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
