Gander RCMP responded to a report of shots fired Tuesday afternoon in the vicinity of the Gander River, near Glenwood. A 47-year-old man was later arrested by tactically trained officers of the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), and a warrant was executed at his remote cabin.

A short time after 2:30 p.m., July 29, Gander RCMP responded to a report of threats and careless use of a firearm, after natural resource enforcement officers working in the area approached a remote cabin in relation to an illegal salmon net deployed in the Gander River.

Gander RCMP officers established an area of containment near the cabin and engaged the RCMP’s Critical Incident Program. The RCMP NL Emergency Response Team (ERT), a drone operator and a crisis negotiator were deployed to the Glenwood area to assist.

With support from a helicopter company in the area, ERT members were airlifted into the remote location and a 47-year-old man was taken into police custody without further incident.

RCMP East District General Investigation Section (GIS) was engaged and assist with obtaining a search warrant for the man’s remote property. Investigators traveled by boat to the scene where police executed the search warrant, resulting in the seizure of five firearms

With the support of Gander RCMP officers, the man was transported to the detachment and was later released from custody. He is set to appear in Gander Provincial Court on August 7, 2025, to answer to the criminal charges of:

  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Uttering threats – 3 counts

The investigation is continuing at this time, with additional charges possible.
