Twillingate RCMP is investigating a fire that completely destroyed an abandoned school structure south of Little Harbour early Thursday morning. Investigators are seeking information from the public to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Just before 4:00 a.m. on August 14, Twillingate RCMP responded to a report of a fire at an abandoned school structure in close proximity to Route 340 near Little Harbour.
The fire completely destroyed the structure and began to spread into the nearby woods before it was fully extinguished by fire crews, who then monitored the area for hot spots. No injuries were reported.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing at this time.
Any residents with surveillance or dash camera footage recorded during the early morning hours of Thursday along Route 340 in the Little Harbour area, or anyone with information about this fire is asked to contact Twillingate RCMP at 709-884-2811 immediately.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador extends its gratitude to the Twillingate Fire Department for its quick response and actions, which prevented the fire from spreading further into the dry brush and trees. RCMP also wishes to thank the citizen who observed smoke in the area and immediately called 911.
A province-wide fire ban is currently in effect. Failure to comply with the provincial fire ban may result in substantial fines and/or criminal charges.
