Gander RCMP apprehended a shoplifting suspect Sunday afternoon after mechanical issues with his vehicle forced him to stop on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway. The 38-year-old man now faces theft charges related to three separate occurrences.

Just before 3:00 p.m. on September 7, Gander RCMP responded to a report of a theft at the Dominion grocery store on Laurell Road in Gander. RCMP were told that the suspect departed the store in a vehicle, and a licence plate was provided to police.

A Glovertown RCMP officer on patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description provided stopped on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway. A traffic stop was conducted with the vehicle. The driver, a 38-year-old man, was identified as the shoplifting suspect. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police learned that the 38-year-old man had committed two prior thefts at the same grocery store, one on August 8, 2025 and another on September 2, 2025.

The man was later released on conditions. He is expected to appear in court in November to answer to all 3 charges of theft under $5,000.

Investigations into the thefts are continuing. Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact Gander RCMP at 709-256-6841.
