Tomorrow (Saturday, September 13) marks the start of big game hunting season in many areas of our province.
If you plan to hunt this season, RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador reminds you to be safe, be responsible and obey all relevant laws and regulations. This includes safe handling of your firearm and ensuring that you and your hunting party have a plan and prepare before you go.
A few tips to keep in mind this hunting season:
- Do not hunt unless you have a license to do so. It is against the law to hunt, take, or kill any wildlife without a valid licence.
- Ensure your firearm is safely stored in your vehicle when transporting. Handle firearms with care and attention at all times.
- Know your surroundings and stay away from residential neighbourhoods and areas.
- Never shoot unless you’re sure of your target and what lies beyond.
- Be visible! Make sure that you can be easily seen by other hunters.
- Tell someone where you will be hunting and when you expect to return.
- Carry a survival kit and a small first aid kit with you at all times
- Never drink or consume drugs while hunting.
You can report improper and illegal firearms or impaired operation of any vehicle (including an off-road vehicle) to your local police detachment.
If you have concerns about suspicious hunting activity in your community, visit stoppoaching.ca to learn how you can make an anonymous report.
Let’s make this hunting season a safe one for everyone.
