This weekend, Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP stopped and impounded the vehicle of a prohibited driver at an impaired driving checkpoint near Isle aux Morts.

On November 15 at approximately 12:50 a.m., police at a checkpoint on Route 470 near Isle aux Morts stopped a passenger vehicle and determined that the driver — a 50-year-old man — was driving while prohibited Canada-wide.

The driver was arrested and charged with operation while prohibited. His vehicle was seized and impounded by police.

He was released from custody and will appear in provincial court in April 2026.

Officers with Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP conducted a series of checkpoints in the area over the weekend looking for impaired drivers, checking for seatbelts and ensuring vehicles and drivers were operating safely and with the appropriate documentation. Checkpoints will continue as part of RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador’s continued commitment to making our roadways safer for everyone.
