RCMP officers in Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador were busy on Thursday night as deteriorating weather conditions created hazardous conditions for drivers.

Across the eastern part of island, police responded to at least six reports of vehicles that had left the roadway or collided with other vehicles in icy or slushy conditions. Most of these incidents were minor, however, one collision in the Clarenville area resulted in a driver being transported to hospital for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The weather also prompted a warning from Avalon East District RCMP about extremely poor road conditions along Witless Bay Line and in the surrounding area.

With the recent, unpredictable weather patterns, shorter days and more winter weather on the way, RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador is urging all motorists to drive with caution. Remember:

  • Snow means slow. Always drive according to the road and weather conditions.
  • Monitor weather forecasts for your route and allow extra time to arrive at your destination.
  • Increase your following distance from other vehicles to give yourself time to stop and to avoid sudden braking.
  • In severe weather, the safest choice is to stay home when possible.

If you see a driver operating in a dangerous manner, or if you suspect a driver of operating while impaired, please report it as soon as it is safe to do so by calling 9-1-1.
