A police speed radar from inside a police vehicle shows a speed of 164, and a view of snow and ice covered winter roads in front of the police vehicle.
A Traffic Services East officer stopped a vehicle observed travelling at speeds up to 164 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone on the Trans-Canada Highway

A 63-year-old man had his licence suspended on Wednesday after he was caught traveling 74 km/h over the speed limit by RCMP Traffic Services East.

On December 10, 2025, at around 12:00 p.m. noon, a Traffic Services East officer stopped a vehicle observed travelling at speeds up to 164 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone on the Trans-Canada Highway inside Terra Nova National Park.

The driver was ticketed for excessive speeding and issued a seven-day suspension under the Highway Traffic Act.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador urges motorists to slow down and drive with added caution as weather and road condition can change and deteriorate quickly, and moose and other wildlife are still on the move.

The holiday season can feel hectic — from crossing things off your list to visiting family and friends, it might seem like there is never enough time to get things done. But, the extra minute or two that you might save by speeding is simply not worth it. There are penalties like fines, or having your license suspended or vehicle impounded. But there are far worse consequences, like life-altering injuries or even death. Celebrate safely and slow down.
