A dark colored truck is pulled over on the side of a road. A police vehicle’s radar is pictured in the foreground displaying a speed of 160 km/hr.

RCMP Traffic Services West suspended the licence of a 20-year-old driver on Thursday for traveling 60 km/h over the posted speed limit.

Around 2:15 p.m. on January 8, 2026, an officer with RCMP Traffic Services Central conducting enforcement on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Lewisporte observed a vehicle travelling at speeds up to 160 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone.

A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver — a 20-year-old man — was ticketed for excessive speeding. His driver’s licence was suspended.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador urges motorists to slow down and plan ahead. The extra minute or two that you might save by speeding is not worth it. There are penalties – like fines, having your license suspended or seeing your vehicle seized and impounded. But there are far worse consequences: you could seriously hurt yourself, your passengers, other drivers, pedestrians or animals. In some cases, your speed could cause life-altering injury or cost someone their life.
