Following a report of a man pointing a firearm in Deer Lake on January 24, 2026, a 74-year-old man was arrested by Deer Lake RCMP. With assistance from the RCMP West District General Investigation Section (GIS) a search warrant was executed at the man’s residence, and a pellet gun was seized.

At approximately 9:41 a.m. on Saturday, police received a report that a man was threatening others with a firearm in the area of First Avenue. Officers responded to the area and made contact with the individual, who was ordered from his home. He cooperated and was taken into police custody without incident.

The RCMP West District GIS team was engaged and a warrant authorized under the Criminal Code was obtained to search the man’s residence. A pellet gun was seized as a result of the search.

The 74-year-old man was later released from police custody on strict conditions. He is expected to face charges including pointing a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. His first appearance in Corner Brook Provincial Court is slated for March 24, 2026

The investigation is ongoing.

Less powerful pellet or BB guns are not deemed to be firearms for licencing and registration purposes under the Firearms Act. However, they are considered to be firearms under the Criminal Code if they are used in a criminal or negligent manner.
