Two drivers had their vehicles impounded and driver’s licences suspended in separate traffic stops, after RCMP Traffic Services East observed each driver traveling at speeds up to 70 km/h over the posted limit.

On Wednesday, May 27 around 9:45 p.m., a RCMP Traffic Services East member observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on the Trans-Canada Highway near Soldier’s Pond at a high rate of speed. Radar confirmed a speed of 170 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone.

A traffic stop was initiated and the driver, a 19-year-old man, was ticketed and has his licence suspended. Police also impounded the vehicle he was driving.

On Thursday evening around 5:15 p.m., the same officer was patrolling Veteran’s Memorial Highway (Route 75) near Bay Roberts captured a vehicle traveling southbound at 163 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

That driver, a 30-year-old man, was stopped by police and ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act for excessive speed. His vehicle was seized by police and impounded, and his driver’s licence was suspended.

Speed can kill. Excessive speeding is a common contributor to motor vehicle collisions and roadway fatalities. The moment or two you might gain is not worth it, because the consequences can be far more serious than fines, demerit points and suspensions. You could cause serious, life-altering harm or death for yourself, your passengers and everyone else on the road. Plan ahead and slow down.
